Little Ones, Big Emotions
As we continue to push through these winter months, the cold temperatures, the dreary skies, it's moments like this session that shine bright. I connected with Amelia's mom through Facebook, looking for someone to capture some memories and photos of her little girl as she turns a whole one year old this month. We planned backgrounds and outfits together, and all was set until the day of the session.
On the day of the session, mom came down to help me carry up everything to the apartment, where they graciously welcomed me in. They'd rearranged the furniture so I would have enough space to set up the equipment (backdrop, lighting, props, etc.), too! We chatted about outfits and order of the photos she wanted while I put pieces together, and then the older boys and dad hopped over furniture to meet for the family portrait. Little Amelia was curious, taking in all the new that surrounded her in her home. Her grandparents were there, too - helping make noise and garner smiles behind me. After two poses, the boys were released, and we moved on to the showcase: Amelia. A few backgrounds, and some beautiful smiles in her gorgeous pink floral dress were taken, and then the cake could make an appearance.
The family had opted for me to make a simple smash cake to go with the floral pink and white theme - and it had made the car ride to the photo shoot in perfect condition. Amelia had no idea what to make of the cake! Whether it was a combination of a new face and equipment, a shorter nap, and general one-year-old preferences, she wanted nothing to do with smashing or eating the confection sitting in front of her. Mom cajoled, we tried various distractions, the grandparents made noise and we all sang songs; even dad came back to try and win a few smiles.
In the end, there are some precious photographs to remember this session. Some big smiles, some big tears, but a lot of love. Cake might not be Amelia's favorite, but she loves her parents and her older brothers! I was so glad to be a part of the moments, and I hope the celebration of her one year of life was full of joy!
