Coming in to Her Own
Birthdays are such special moments - a time to remember, revel in a moment, and capture time as it is for just one day. For Emily, turning ONE is a big deal! Mom contacted me well ahead of time to schedule a simple at-home session, away from the hustle and bustle of her actual party (complete with family and friends, and lots of prep and energy!) weekend. We talked about props and backgrounds, cake stands and flowers to settle on this sweet, bright set up.
After getting my equipment and backdrop set up, we started with some family photos to get Emily warmed up to a stranger barging in to her home and trying to get her to smile. A few with big brother, and some of Mom with her kiddos rounded out the first portion of the session. Emily is a serious one, with big eyes that take in the world around her before she decides what to do next. While we barely cracked a smile for the family photos, we worked hard for the milestone and cake smash expressions.
As is often the case for one year photo sessions, the lady of the moment had her own ideas for what she wanted to do! She much preferred climbing in and out of the small brown chair I brought along (so much so that we slid her cake onto it to get her to touch the frosting!), and the exploration of textures and sounds was much more fun that sitting and smiling. The baby's breath was fun to throw, the chair to bang, the balloons to bounce - but that didn't stop us from capturing a sweet little lady for her special milestone!
During our time together, Emily was all about Mom, even in the midst of all the distractions. Walking meant hanging on to Mom's finger, a bit more confident with her mama there, always looking for where she went. I hope the tenderness of that relationship continues on as she looks to her mom as the years go by! Little Emily is well on her way to making her mark - all the facial expressions, all the curiosity, and all the personality to face this world. Happy Birthday!
