In Like a Lion...
I remember my grandmother quoting the springtime adage "March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb" often. It's been the case many a year. This year, mid-March has seemed a bit like a ping pong match with temperatures fluctuating and wind, rain, sun, and snow and competing for different days here in Northern Virginia. That said, with a trip north to visit family, March seemed a bit more "stable" in the end-of-winter and start-of-spring category.
My time in New York was short, but we slipped in a quick maternity session - the kind that can't wait until the next family visit north or south. A local favorite, the session was set for Black Creek Park. When both pavilions (which would have offered a bit of shelter and some alternate backgrounds) were full of people and parties, we shifted to the lake near the playgrounds. One step out of our cars, and we knew it was March! A cold and blustery wind greeted us, chilling the already cold day to something that wouldn't withstand more than 10 minutes. But mama and family braved the gusts and put on smiles for a few minutes so we could capture the growing family in the perfect overcast lighting of the day.
...Take Two...
As is sometimes the case, the weather just didn't cooperate for a full family session outdoors. We swapped for home and a simple background. The bright florals of mama's dress paired well with the solids, and the plain background allowed the family to take center stage. Only 4 weeks to go, the perfect timing for a maternity session, and the glow was visible!
The joy of photographing family and friends is in building rapport and relationship. Catching the looks, the giggles, and hilarity as the session progresses is my favorite! We're looking forward to adding another little face to the next photo shoot!
